UNDERSTAND WHAT EXISTS, AND HOW IT’S CURRENTLY HELD
At this stage, we help artists take stock of their work in a practical, visual way.
This often includes:
- Identifying where artwork is located (studio, storage, home, digital files)
- Understanding what is (and isn’t) labeled or documented
- Reviewing any existing records, archives, or systems
- Establishing a simple, workable structure for tracking work
DECIDE HOW YOUR WORK SHOULD BE CARED FOR
Once there’s clarity, we help artists think through decisions that shape what happens next.
This can include:
- Archiving and labeling priorities
- Choosing a steward or heir and identifying where they need help
- Capturing legacy wishes and boundaries
- Identifying what needs attention now vs. later
ALIGN PEOPLE, PRIORITIES, AND PATHS FORWARD
This stage focuses on preparing both the work and the people who will care for it.
This can include:
- Aligning with stewards around expectations and roles
- Clarifying which work may be donated, sold, or released
- Discussing discarding work when appropriate
- Documenting gallery and collector relationships and context
